The fifth iteration of Purple Comet is here! Despite vanishing during last year's observation period, the comet has returned with a vengeance, hiding Purple Coins and Green Stars across nearly 500 maps! Following tradition, a crowd of two teams have gathered to see who can collect the most!

This year, the three-time champions Team Crimson face the newly-banded Team Azure for the crown!

What is the Purple Comet Event?

The Purple Comet event is an intense competition between two teams that takes across the entirety of the server. Both teams search maps attempting to find Purple Coins hidden within them. It tests your skill and knowledge of maps, but is still accessible for people of all skill levels. Being proficient at parkour will help for some coins, but is by no means a requirement.

What are Purple Coins?

Purple Coins are purple heads hidden throughout maps. Your objective is to collect as many of them as possible before time runs out. To collect them, right click them. A message will appear in chat and the coin will disappear. Each Purple Coin is worth one point.

Purple Coins look like this:

Where can Purple Coins be found?

A Purple Coin will be placed in every map. Specifically, they will be placed in all maps in the FFA and FFA+ that have a non-zero point rating (so maps like World 1-1 and Wool Town: Retro are excluded).

Hub maps and spawn will not contain coins. Due to technical restrictions, Frienemy will not have a coin either.

What are Green Stars?

Green Stars are special coins that are much harder to obtain than Purple Coins. They tend to be hidden in extremely difficult to reach areas. They act like normal Purple Coins, but are worth triple points. A map will never contain both a Purple Coin and a Green Star. This year, the list of maps that contain Green Stars will not be revealed.

Green Stars look like this:

Rules

Please follow these rules to ensure optimal fun and smooth operation of the event.

Breaking the rules may result in disqualification, nullification of any coins collected, and a server ban.

We have banned multiple people in the past for cheating, don’t make us do it again.

  1. All server rules apply. They can be found at https://wiki.minr.org/Server_Rules.
  2. Don’t use hacks such as freecamming or x-ray.
  3. Once FFA and FFA+ have been closed for coin hiding, do not enter maps or collect coins until the event starts.
  4. Do not sabotage your own team or collude with the (obviously inferior) other team.
  5. Don’t abuse any privileges you get from your rank. Greens should not use any green-only commands. (Ops should also have region bypass off)
  6. Entering maps from the outside is not allowed.
  7. Time is called solely by the event hosts.
  8. Follow all instructions from your lovely event hosts (rmanimal and CreepaShadowz).

Event information and sign-up

The event will take place on the 14th of August. The team setup starts at 7:30pm UTC, and the event will start a half hour later once teams are assigned (+ any delay). The event itself lasts three hours. The team that scores the most points wins. A tie will be broken with sudden death (next coin wins). Some time zone conversions for when team setup begins are:

August 14th
12:30pm (After noon) PDT (UTC -7) [San Francisco]
3:30pm EST (UTC -4) [New York]
8:30pm BST (UTC +1) [London]
10:30pm MSK (UTC +3) [Moscow]
August 15th
4:30am JST (UTC +9) [Tokyo]
5:30am AEST (UTC +10) [Sydney]

We will accept walk-ins, but it is highly recommended you sign up so we can pre-allocate the teams. The sign-up link is here: https://forms.gle/sRmn6CM2cSxaNFoq8.

Prizes

All members of the winning team that score at least one point will receive the ** prefix for one month.
All members of the losing team that score at least one point will receive the * prefix for one month.

All players who score at least 1 point will receive an exclusive Purple Coin hat.
Anyone who scores at least 15 points will receive the elusive Green Star hat.

Note only coins collected during the main three hours count towards hat prizes, as they are the only coins that award points. Coins collected outside the main event award zero points.

Prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the hosts.

FAQ

Can I be on a team with my friends?

It depends. The main goal is to ensure that the teams are balanced. We will try to accommodate this if possible but if you are a higher-skilled green then this probably won’t be the case.

Can I be an independent?

No, this is a team event. You still have an individual score, though.

I’m partway through a map/challenge, can I still participate?

Since you will be joining lots of different maps through the course of the event, you will need to make sure you are not in a map when the event starts. It is recommended you quit a challenge instead of suspending it, since some maps may become inaccessible to you as a result.

Blues will not lose their Hardcore checkpoint.

Can I share coins?

During the event, you may freely share the location of coins with your team. This is useful if you are having trouble obtaining it. However, only one person will retain credit for collecting it. Outside of the main event, you must be the one to collect a coin you have discovered.

To reaffirm, coins collected outside the main event do not award points and do not count for hat prizes.

There’s a technical glitch and I cannot collect a coin. What do I do?

First, make sure you are within clicking range. Send a screenshot with your debug screen on in Discord to rmanimal (rmanimal#3913) for manual verification. First-in first-served. If a coin requires a tricky leap to collect, we may rescript the coin and require you to click it. We will do our best to manually track the coins alongside the automated system.

How do I see what coins have and haven’t be collected?

We will maintain a public spreadsheet that contains the scoreboard, who has collected what coins, and which maps still contain coins. There tends to be a lag when updating it (especially at the start), so keep an eye on chat as well.

Additional Credits

A massive thank you to SomePunWithChloe, without which the event would not have been possible this summer. She found nearly half of the coin locations for the event! She also took the picture at the top of the thread ;)

We hope to see you all there. Good luck, and happy hunting!

Quick question about the prizes, will the Purple Coin and Green Star hats be the same hats given out as prizes from Purple Coin IV or will they be different?

How are purple maps going to work? Will each stage of Memories, for example, get a coin, or will it be like years previous with only one coin for the whole map?

Another question sorry, just looking for clarification. There's a few points made on the post that might(?) contradict information if you could clear it up.

"A Purple Coin will be placed in every map."
"A map will never contain both a Purple Coin and a Green Star."
"This year, the list of maps that contain Green Stars will not be revealed."
"We will maintain a public spreadsheet that contains the scoreboard, who has collected what coins, and which maps still contain coins."

One can definitely infer that a purple coin would be in every map except for those with a green star using just the first two sentences, however if that were true wouldn't the list of green stars be revealed due to you maintaining a spreadsheet of what maps contain purple coins?

We're still figuring hammering that out, but in general it's likely to be one coin per map. Multiple stages and multiple endings will likely not result in multiple coins.

Green Stars are considered "coins". You'll know which maps contain coins, you just won't know whether its a Purple Coin or a Green Star.

Although just to tack on, when a Green Star is found and collected, it will be added to the spreadsheet accordingly.

Due to an unprecedented number of signups (we've had 100 responses), to keep things mangable we will be closing signups at the end of today. We will also no longer be accepting walk-ins. If you want to withdraw, please DM myself or @rmanimal on Discord.
