I had to zoom out for this screenshot as i had to go to work today. For reference the area in my previous screenshot is in the white frame.
So i created a 44 km / 27 miles long control field from Cadzand (NL), just accross the border from where i live, to Ghent (BE) where i work.
It's about 29.000 MU. (It's kind of a shame you get the same amount of AP no matter how big the control field is.)

And Lvl 6. (You need to double your Action Points to level up.)
My legs and feet are starting to get used to 4+ hours of walking a day.
But my phone's battery will rage quit after 4h of GPS/Data/Ingress at the same time.
So i will need some external batteries.
And a mobile solar panel to recharge those if needed.
And a mobile satellite modem because it kinda sucks to spend a few hours to get to a specific portal only to find out your phone has no data connection there.
My weekend playground :

Sucks to be me... whole area occupied by lvl 8 blues... how to get their portals :/
Oh and.. our skating park randomly has around 4-5 portals on one spot 0.o (all blue though..)

Until you're lvl 4, there is no point attacking them.
But you can hack them, you will lose some XMP but you will gain 100 AP and a few high level items (if the portals are high level).
To level up more quickly you should look on https://www.ingress.com/intel for a town or city near you with a lot of un-captured or friendly portals.
(Make sure you zoom in enough to see the lvl 0 / un-captured portals)
Then hack them,
deploy as many resonators as needed,
add 2 mods if the slots are free,
try to link to as many places as possible (and eventually create a control field.)
Do the same for all the portals in the area you can get to.
When you're done, re-do the same round once or twice for more items, links, fields and of course AP.
Case in point, Oostburg, Zeeland :

Well, I've been forced into getting an iphone (Seriously, one day we were out shopping and I was told our contract time was up for new phones and I had to get a smart phone and all the non-iphone ones were ridiculously large. So yea...) so I'm going to give this a go.

Join the resistance, because we are trying to preserve the remaining vestiges of humanity from changes by the XM, which controls human thought.
On a different note, I found 4 portals right next to each other that now belong to me, and no one else has been near them for about a week. Almost up to level 3 now

GPS doesn't need to know your country, it just triangulates your coords. If Google maps knows your country, it should work.
Maybe a problem with your GPS or a bug in the game.

You'll then be able to have up to 2000 items.

I have a great location here for item farming and potentially gaining some levels. Free Wifi in old town and a lot of city landmarks, so lots of portals pop up

Spon, are you only using the app or are you also using http://www.ingress.com/intel ? my picture there is from the intel page, I'm still planning on a trip to old town...there's a mexican restaurant there I haven't been to in years that I used to enjoy

I used the same strat, in a neighboring town on the BE side this time, and made 75k AP in a few hours.
I've visited most of the portals there 2 or 3 times.
Capturing them if they were unclaimed. Recharging them or adding resonators / mods if needed. And, of course, i tried to make as many links and fields as possible.
The blue portals still left, i left alone because i needed the ammo for my home town and because they weren't linked so didn't block my way.
